Cotentin Peninsula
The Cotentin was the American airborne sector. The 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions dropped inland during the night of 5 to 6 June to secure the causeways behind Utah Beach, scattered widely by cloud and anti-aircraft fire. Sainte-Mere-Eglise became the first town in France to be liberated, and the campaign that followed drove north to capture the port of Cherbourg.
