Bayeux and the Bessin

Bayeux was the first French town liberated, taken on 7 June and spared the bombardment that flattened Caen, so its medieval centre survives intact. The surrounding Bessin holds the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in France and served as the Allied rear area through the summer of 1944.
