Where to See the Mulberry Harbour at Arromanches

One of the boldest feats of D-Day was not a weapon but a harbour. Unable to capture a working port intact, the Allies built two artificial harbours in Britain and towed them across the Channel in sections.

Mulberry B was assembled off Arromanches on Gold Beach. At its peak it landed thousands of tons of supplies a day, keeping the advancing armies fed and fuelled.

The vast concrete caissons of the breakwater still lie in the bay and can be seen clearly from the seafront, especially at low tide. The clifftop Longues-sur-Mer Battery a short drive west makes a natural pairing for a half-day on this stretch of coast.
